Year Two at Swing Fore Kids – Sac County Country Club
Year two at Swing Fore Kids brought us back to the well manicured Sac County Country Club. Josh keeps this place looking fantastic. The fairways were pristine, the greens rolled true, and the hospitality was second to none.
Our assigned location was Hole #2. The good news? We had plenty of shade.
The bad news? We were standing directly in the flight path of the short 237-yard dogleg right par 4. More than once we had the "buzz the tower" moments as golf balls came whistling overhead. Nothing gets your attention quite like hearing a Pro V1 before you see it.
From our shady perch, we also had front row seats to golfers searching the trees for their golf balls. One gentleman appeared to either be visually impaired... or beverage impaired... because we watched him walk face first into a tree.
Yes, that's a true story.
Hello, tree hugger.
Before the par three festivities even got rolling, we witnessed one of the shots of the day a chip in from roughly 50 yards out on the #1 green from just behind our tee box. That's the kind of shot that makes you forget the previous three holes ever happened.
Then came the main event: the 115 yard par 3.
On paper, it looked simple enough. Trees lined the right side, woods guarded the left, and judging by the humidity, there had to be a sauna operating somewhere nearby. It wasn't just hot it was moist and sticky. The kind of weather where you start sweating while doing nothing at all.
The green looked inviting, except for one long branch hanging over the fairway that apparently had beef with golf balls. It reached out and swatted several shots out of the air, while the deep rough on the right looked like it had been collecting donations for the grounds crew's next bucket of lost balls.
We saw some beautiful tee shots... and we saw some that were less beautiful. There were a few that traveled about 12 yards off the tee before deciding they'd gone far enough.
Around 3:00 p.m someone mentioned the mosquitoes would infiltrate the area.
Correction... a colony of mosquitoes.
Apparently, they'd all just clocked in for their afternoon shift because they came out hungry. If you were there without Bug Soother MAX, you probably donated enough blood to earn a free transfusion.
As always, the three foursomes rotating through each tee time brought plenty of laughs, plenty of beverages, and plenty of optimism that this next shot was finally going to be the one.
And as always, Dan and his crew wrapped up the day by grilling some outstanding steaks. It's hard to beat good golf, good people, good food, and a great cause.
Another successful mission completed for the Golf Hecklers.
Thanks again to everyone at Swing Fore Kids for having us back and for treating us like family. We always appreciate the incredible hospitality.
Until next time... keep it in the short grass. Or at least out of the trees.
